Santa Fe Hylevel Trainsets
Built circa 1955 by the Budd Company for the Santa Fe Railroad as part of their large equipment upgrade for the overnight all coach train the “El Capitan”. Sold to Amtrak after the Santa Fe exited the passenger business and operated by Amtrak until retired in the early 1990’s. The advantage to the Hylevel cars is that you get a dome car view from every car in the train! We have enough cars to supply approximately two full trainsets. These train-sets are ideal for tourist or dinner train service. All cars are of stainless steel construction and have full Head End Power, heat, lights and air conditioning. Most cars have been stored and will need a good cleaning, general mechanical work and new windows.
A typical consist could include:
-Transition Car: Has a standard height door at one end so cars can operate with conventional equipment and a Hylevel height door at the other end. Floor plan consists of restrooms and crew/shower room on lower level ( lower level can be converted to lounge/food prep) and coach area on upper level seating approx. 32 passengers and dormitory area (sleeps approx. 16) which can be converted into additional coach or lounge space.
-Coaches: Has Hylevel height doors at both ends, restrooms and crew room/shower on lower level, full coach seating for approx. 72 passengers on upper level.
-Dining/Lounge Cars: Full stainless electric kitchen on lower level with refrigerators, freezers, grill, convection ovens, etc. Dining/lounge area on upper level for approx. 64 passengers, includes bar/service area.
