Q- How much does it cost to ship a freight car by truck?
A- The cost to ship a freight car by truck is based on mileage and local crane costs. On an average, you can expect to spend a minimum of $8,000-$10,000 if a car is 1 to 2 hours from the final destination. And a minimum of $15,000-$25,000 if the car is further away. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer and we do have several qualified companies we can recommend to assist in the shipping process. If the buyer plans on making the shipping arrangements with a service provider of their choosing, we can assist with speaking with the service provider on what will be required to get the car moved. Often a service provider will either quote high or won't quote at all if they have never moved railroad equipment. After speaking with us, they normally feel more at ease in quoting the job. We do recommend to check with your local municipality to make sure there are no property restrictions or zoning issues that would prohibit placement of a railcar on your property. Feel free to use some photos from our site and show the municipality what your project entails.

Q- How much does it costs to ship a freight car by rail?
A- If the car can be shipped by rail on its own wheels, it will need a mechanical inspection, air brake test and UMLER registration with reporting marks and AEI tags applied to the car. In addition if the car is over 50 years old it may need a FRA waiver for movement. The approx. prep costs will be in the $1,000-$8,000 range and each individual railroad has their own tariff for moving a car as an empty or to home shop for repairs. You can expect to pay around $4.00-$10.00 per mile.
