Built in 1954 by the Budd Company for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway as a full-length dome/ lounge. This series of car was built for use on various Santa Fe routes and included famed trains such as “Super Chief” & “El Capitan. As the traveling public started to migrate to the airlines, many passenger services operated by the private railroads began to fade away. Unfortunately, the Santa Fe was not immune this the new trend. The late 1950’s to early 1960’s saw many of the railroads in the U.S. starting to petition the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to drop passenger service. As inter-city passenger service slowly disappeared, a vast majority of passenger cars were sold off to Amtrak or other private entities. Most of the AT&SF full dome cars were sold to a new passenger operator called Autotrain. This new company started running limited passenger service from choice mid-western and east coast cities to Florida, their trains were equipped with specialty auto-rack cars so you could take your automobile with you to Florida. Although the concept was workable, the high cost of running a passenger service eventually doomed the company to bankruptcy. Most of the cars that comprised the Santa Fe dome car fleet were purchased by Holland America and rebuilt for cruise line shore excursion service in Alaska.  After 10-15 years of service in Alaska the cars were removed from service and sold into private ownership.
