Built for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway by the Pullman Company in 1923 as Santa Fe business car #33. Originally assigned to Mr. Ray Adams the Assistant General Manger of the Los Angeles Division, who reportedly protested the installation of Formica on the walls when Santa Fe rebuilt the car in the 1960’s. Eventually the car was re-assigned to the Assistant General Manager of the Coast Lines Division and finally retired and sold into private ownership in 1969. The early years of #33’s private ownership are a bit sketchy but we do know that it was owned by a Chicago & Northwestern Railroad tower operator out of Chicago and eventually found its way back to California when purchased by ARCO Petroleum of Sacramento CA. Around 1985 #33 was sold again to a group of owners who put the car into Amtrak charter service and renamed it“Tamalpais” and operated the car in charter service until 2004, when it was due for a its PC-2a Amtrak inspection. At that time the original group of owners decided that it was not feasible to make the necessary repairs to the car to continue in Amtrak service and #33 was sold again in approximately 2007. The new owner of the car began a complete rebuilding/restoration to bring #33 back into Amtrak compliance and upgraded many of the outdated mechanical systems to modern standards, resulting in a very original and fully operational Amtrak certified business car. 

As you enter the car from the observation platform you immediately notice the all original quarter sawn golden oak paneling, the original brass light fixtures and leaded glass in the hall doors. The observation lounge seats 8 comfortably and can sleep up two guests on the fold out convertible sofa. As you leave the observation lounge and proceed down the hallway you first pass by the secretary’s rooms with an upper and lower berth folding sink/toilet, plenty of storage and a writing desk. The next room down the hall is the general toilet with a sink, toilet, vanity and a glass and stainless steel shower. Next to the general toilet is a compartment with an upper and lower berth, folding sink/toilet, full size closet and connecting door to the master bedroom.  The master bedroom was normally reserved for the highest ranking railroad official on the car and as you can guess it was the largest bedroom. The Master room is equipped with a full size lower stationary bed, dresser, vanity and medicine chest, folding sink/toilet, large full size closet and plenty of storage. As you leave the master bedroom and proceed down the hall you enter a formal dining room with the original 5th leg dining room table and chairs, large china buffet, brass lighting all paneled in the original blonde oak paneling. From the dining room the hallway moves to the other side of the car and the next room is the crew room which provided accommodations for the chef and steward, this room has a smaller upper and lower berth, toilet and shower. As you proceed down the hall from the crew room you pass by the stainless pantry and finally the fully equipped stainless kitchen. 

Some of the mechanical details include: Great body and roof, 65 KW Stadco diesel generator, holding tanks for all 5 toilets, full Head End Power, MU, 27 pin, 32v emergency lighting, updated refrigeration system in kitchen with large capacity refrigerator, CS couplers, APEE 6x11 bearings with good wheel tread, decelostats, rubber diaphragms, main reservoir air, cast trucks with top mounted equalizers, C-frame disc brakes, Stone Safety condensing unit, 26-C valves, restored open observation platform railings, holding tank, 240v 3 phase standby, approx. 250 gal fuel tank, electric stove/oven and microwave, electric floor and overhead heat, electric hot water, Mircophor toilets, original oak interior, satellite tv, Bose sound system, cell phone amplifiers, wireless internet and GPS tracking system, rebuilt crash posts, rebuilt observation platform, potable hot water circulating loop.

Santa Fe # 33 is a fully operational Amtrak certified car and ready for service, all linens, china, etc are included in the sale of the car.
