ult in 1954 as a Hilevel Transition Coach for the Santa Fe Railway. The Santa Fe wanted to develop a new construction of passenger car that would increase seating capacity and provide a better ride and view for the passengers. The end result is a revolutionary two level passenger car that became known as the Hilevel. The one obstacle was that the Hilevel cars had end doors that were not at the same level as standard single level passenger cars. So they designed the transition cars, which had a Hilevel door at one end and a low level door at the opposite end. This car is one of those transition cars with end doors at both levels. The Santa Fe retired the cars and sold them to Amtrak who remodeled the lower door end of the car with a series for dormitory rooms for the dining car staff to sleep in (rooms can be removed for additional coach or lounge seating) The lower level is equipped with men's and ladies restrooms and an additional crew space and/or crew shower.
Some of the car details include good stainless body & roof, Head End Power and MU, 27 pin com, CS couplers, OSSH disc brake trucks, fair wheels, emergency lights, will need some interior electrical work.
