Built in 1916 by Pullman as business car #16 for the Illinois Central Railroad, renumbered to IC #1, #9 and finally Illinois Central Gulf #9 before it was retired and sold into private ownership. As you walk into the car from the observation end you enter a cozy lounge seating approximate 8 passengers, from the lounge you enter the hall which leads you past the secretaries office/bedroom and two state rooms connected by a shared toilet/shower and a general toilet accessible from a door in the hall. From the hall you enter a elegant dining room with unique recessed lighting around the windows and the original dining room table equipped with the traditional 5th leg. As you pass from the dining room into the service hall you pass the pantry/crew quarters and kitchen. Some of the King Cottons mechanical details include: Microphor toilet processing tank, good carbody, truck mounted cylinders, grease bearings, 27 pin communication lines, head end power, H couplers, Waukesha ice engine & generator, 32 vdc motor generator to charge batteries while on HEP, bolted pedestals, cast shoes, 480/240v transformers, rubber diaphragms, propane fired Watchman car heater, original coal stove in kitchen converted to propane.
