Built in 1948 by the Budd Company for the Burlington Railroad as a dome coach for service on the California Zephyr. Silver Lariat became the property of the Burlington Northern Railroad after the Burlington & Great Northern merged. After 1971 all BN passenger service and equipment was transferred to Amtrak, along with Silver Lariat. Amtrak finally retired the car in 1980 and sold it into private ownership in 1985. The current owners rebuilt the car from the ground up, creating a very flexible floor plan that can be used for a variety of purposes. As you walk into the car from the vestibule end there is a large dining/lounge area that will seat 24 passengers, this room is also equipped with a full bar (The bar has a freezer capable of storing 200 pounds of ice). From this room, you can also access the dome which has seating for an additional 24 passengers at tables. From the main dining/lounge area, there is a passageway the leads under the dome to the restrooms and a full kitchen. The kitchen is really a masterpiece of space utilization, custom designed, every single inch of available space has been used creating a highly functional full-service kitchen. At the blind end of the car is another dining/lounge area that will seat an additional 18 passengers. One of the unique features of this room is the original mural commissioned by the Burlington Railroad when the car was built. Silver Lariat is a fully Amtrak certified car and ready for service.
