Nickel Plate Road Business Car #1

NKP #1 is a very original and complete car. It is not on live rail and will need to be trucked from current location!

Built by the Pullman Company in 1926 as an all steel business car for the Nickle Plate Road and assigned to the Van Sweringen brothers (principal stockholders of the NKP). Heaviest of the NKP business cars, #1 (also known as One Spot to NKP employees) was one of the best riding cars on the railroad. The car was leased to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (another Van Sweringen controlled road) from 1942 to 1949, and then it was returned to service on the Nickel Plate. Following the merger with the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1964, One Spot  was re-lettered to Norfolk & Western,  but retained its number. In May of 1967 the car was renumbered to N&W #103 and was assigned to Mr. W.C. Stevens, General Manager of the Eastern Region and stationed at Bluefield, WV. In 1971, the N&W sold the car to a Mr. Henry Kegleywho moved it to a siding  near Bristol VA. One Spot was eventually purchased by the current owners who have lovingly cared for this beautiful car for almost 20 years.

As you board the car from the observation platform you enter into the observation lounge, complete with a convertible sofa and seating for five in the original lounge chairs. From the lounge you enter the hallway that that passes along the secretary's room (D), two master bedrooms (B & C) and the guest room (A). The two master rooms are separated by the general toilet that is equipped with the original tub and shower.  At the end of the hall you enter into a formal dining room with the original china buffet and writing desk. Just past the dining room you enter into the service hall that passes the crew room, pantry and kitchen equipped with the original Sterns stove.

Oris & Mantis Van Sweringen

Some of One Spots mechanical details include: Great body & roof, 240V single side HEP, H couplers, original A/C with updated 240V motors, electric hot water heat, original electrical system, HYATT oil bath bearings, bolted pedestal trucks, truck mounted cylinders, comp shoes, Adlake windows, D-22 valves, 5.5 x 10 bearings. The One Spot is an absolutely stunning car, with all the original fixtures and furniture, you can almost smell the cigar smoke drifting from the lounge as the Van Sweringen brothers build their railroad empire while sipping brandy.

NOTE: This car is not on live rail and WILL need to be trucked from its current location!
