Built in 1955 by the Budd Company for the Great Northern Railway as a full-length dome/ lounge. This series of car was built for use on various GN routes and included famed trains such as the Empire Builder . As the traveling public started to migrate to the airlines, many passenger services operated by the private railroads began to fade away. Unfortunately, the Great Northern was not immune this the new trend. The late 1950’s to early 1960’s saw many of the railroads in the U.S. starting to petition the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to drop passenger service. As inter-city passenger service slowly disappeared, a vast majority of passenger cars were sold off to Amtrak or other private entities.  Prairie View  was eventually purchased by Holland America and rebuilt for cruise line shore excursion service in Alaska.  After 10-15 years of service in Alaska the cars were removed from service and sold into private ownership.

Prairie View  is in operating condition and some of the mechanical features include: Six axle OSSH trucks, disc brakes, rotating end cap roller bearings, stainless steel construction, H couplers, full HEP, holding tanks, rubber diaphragms, full heat and A/C, emergency lights, high capacity lounge/dining area on upper level, full electric kitchen, pantry and dining room on the lower level, emergency windows, two restrooms, diesel generator (located in a generator compartment that is accessible from the interior and exterior of the car). This car is in operating condition and can be shipped on its own wheels in freight service.
