Built in 1958 by the Budd Company as a slumber coach for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Originally constructed for B&O's famed train the Columbian and operated between Baltimore & Chicago. Retired by B&O and sold to Amtrak who rebuilt the car in their Heritage Fleet program and equipped it with new electrical, heating & air conditioning systems. Retired by Amtrak and sold into private ownership in the 1990's.
The introduction of Slumber coaches was a desperate attempt by the railroads to win back passenger traffic, they offered overnight accommodations at a fraction of the price of a standard sleeping car, of course the passenger also got a fraction of the room. Compact but efficient, a slumber coach could sleep over 30 passengers as compared to the standard 22 of a normal sleeper. Slumberland was purchased by the current owner with the intent to have the car Amtrak certified, the project was not completed but the 40 yr rebuild on the trucks is approximately 90% complete only need re-qualified equalizers. Some of the mechanical details on the car include: Great stainless body and roof, HEP (needs new pigtails but car does power up and everything works), 27 Pin, MU, floor & overhead heat, A/C, freeze protection, markers, emergency windows, emergency lights, PA system (missing amp), decelosats, Amtrak electrical locker, ABDW brake valves, T-frame disc brakes, needs new window glazing, OSSH trucks (40 yr rebuild 90% done), complete interior (except 1 toilet), H couplers (1 new installed), APEE bearings, side sills have been dye checked (sill skirts are inside car), trainline complete tested, serviceable wheels.
