Sleep in style on the Silver Lodge!
Built in 1952 by the Budd Company for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad as a 6 roomette, 4 double bedroom, 6 section sleeping car and named Silver Flower. It was originally built for pool service on CB&Q's famed trains the Black-Hawk & American Royal Zephyr. Ownership of the car transferred to Burlington Northern after the CB&Q/Great Northern merger and when the BN ceased passenger service in the early 1970’s the car was sold to Amtrak. Amtrak retired the car in the 1980’s and it was sold into private ownership, the current owner bought the car in 1988 and renamed it Silver Lodge. After purchase the car was rebuilt and reconfigured into a 6 roomette, 4 double bedroom, crew room (sleeps 4) and two compartment sleeper and will sleep a total of 18 revenue passengers and four crew.
As you enter the car from the vestibule end there is an electrical locker and storage locker with hot water tank on the right behind the door and a general restroom with shower to the left. As you proceed down the hall you pass by the six roomettes each with its own berth that folds out of the wall, folding sink, small closet and luggage storage shelf. Before you turn right at the end of the short hall there is another general restroom equipped only with a toilet and sink. As you proceed down the hall to the right you will go by what was originally the four double bedrooms each sleeping two in an upper and lower berth. Essentially these rooms are unchanged except that they are used as mini suites that will sleep 1-4 passengers. One restroom annex in each set has been converted into a shower so that each suite has a toilet annex and a shower annex. The next room down the hall is a four berth crew dorm room with linen and luggage storage. Past the crew dorm are two custom built compartments utilizing the original upper and lower berth from the original sections, each with their own toilet annex. Once you are past the compartments you are at the end of the car where there is another general toilet with shower and a laundry/storage room with an upright washer and dryer.
Silver Lodge is a fully operational car and is Amtrak certified, the mechanical details include: Amtrak certified for “A” clearance, excellent exterior, ISSH trucks, decelostats, H couplers, full Head End Power, 27 pin communication line, MU line, marker lights, emergency lights, rubber diaphragms, serviceable wheels, current PC-1, water raising compressor, 480v/240v/110v electrical system, Cummins 4 cylinder turbo 65 KW diesel generators w/roll out arms, 200 gal diesel fuel tank, 26-C brake valves, C-disc brakes, 3 Microphor processing tanks, R-22 10 ton air conditioning system, under car storage box, APEE bearings, freeze protection, sound absorbing carpet on interior walls and floor, hot water circulating loop, 600 gal potable water tank, electric floor and over head heat, inter-car phone system.
