Santa Fe Lounge Car "Acoma" REDUCED

-- Located in New Mexico. Asking price: . --

(ACK-uh-muh)

This car is fully Amtrak certified but will need to have a current PC-1 inspection.

Built in 1937 by the Budd Company for the Santa Fe Railroad as part of the first lightweight edition of their famed train the Super Chief. Known as the "Train of the Stars", the Super Chief was a first class Chicago to Los Angeles streamliner that set the standard for deluxe travel west of Chicago. Retired by the Santa Fe and sold into private ownership, Acoma operated in tourist train service for several years before being rebuilt to Amtrak certification. You have to see this car to understand how perfect it is, the only significant change made to the car is barber shop which was converted to a full kitchen. Walking through the rest of the car is like stroll back in time and you expect to see Cary Grant enjoying a cocktail in the lounge while chatting with Frank Sinatra.

As you enter the car from the spotless vestibule you pass by the general toilet which is right behind the end door of the car. Just around the corner is the crew dormitory which is still used as dormitory space. This room is equipped with seven berths, a restroom, shower and a ton of storage space! The main lounge of the car is the next room, on the end wall is the original Santa Fe system map installed while the car was still in service. Just below the map is the original magazine rack and writing desk, the rest of the room has a seven seat lounge with original seats and drink stands (drink stands not included with car), two four top tables and a large fourteen person cocktail lounge. Probably the best feature of the lounge is the original bar, adorned with a Navajo Thunderbird, etched mirror and actual Acoma tribe pottery. The bar has ample refrigeration, under counter sinks, outlets and ample storage. The next room is what makes this car so usable, a well thought out full service kitchen. The kitchen has a full refrigerator, pantry shelves, two microwave/convection ovens, cook top, dish washer, tons of storage and a custom built fold out shelf across the door way so the service staff can pick up plates for delivery to the lounge during meal service.

Down the hall from the kitchen is the rebuilt electric locker equipped with Amtrak control and lighting panels, generator control and HVAC controls. Across from the electrical locker is more storage and the original built in freezers. Acoma is one of the most functional cars in service today, perfect as a stand alone car, operating with a sleeper or business car or as an addition to any business car train.

Some of the mechanical details include: Excellent body and roof, spotless under car, large capacity fuel tank, OSSH trucks (from Pine series sleeper), decelostats, disc brakes, great wheels, 27 pin, MU, full Head End Power, rubber diaphragms, CS couplers, 26-C brake valves, holding tanks, full freeze protection, electric floor and OH heat, APEE bearings, 65 KW Stadco generator (approx 852 hours), emergency lights, Amtrak style air conditioning condensing unit.

UPDATE 12/1/17: Car has received  four new emergency windows and some new upholstery in lounge.

UPDATE 11/30/18: The PC-1 inspection has expired and the COT&S is in date for the next year
