Silver Canyon SOLD

-- Located in California. Asking price: . --

Built by the Budd Company in 1948 for the Western Pacific Railroad as a 10 roomette/ 6 double bedroom sleeper and it was WP's contribution to the California Zephyr pool. A Southern Pacific sleeper was wrecked on the WP so the WP gave the Silver Canyon to the SP as payment for damages. The SP ran the car in passenger service for several years and then was rebuilt into a test & instrument car for locomotive testing. The original floor plan has been rebuilt, as you walk in from the vestibule end you enter a very large and impressive stainless steel kitchen with stove, oven, trash compactor, stainless sinks, large coolers/freezers and tons of storage space. Next is a small dining area seating eight in two booths, next to the dining area are several of the original roomettes and a restroom/shower. Next are two of the original double bedrooms and a large observation lounge with windows in the "A" end of the car. Remove the old computer equipment from the lounge and Silver Canyon would make an excellent conversion into a private car. Some of the mechanical details include: 2-25KW 230v 3 phase Detroit diesel generators, air conditioning, electric floor & OH heat, Microphor toilets, ISSH trucks, GREAT stainless fluting with very little dents or damage, Rotating end cap bearings, good wheels, full skirting, fuel tank, disc brakes, drop equalizers, some minor center sill damage- (approx 6-7,000 repair to the center sill flange and only needed for Amtrak service), nice interior.
